Exclusively available from the Swiss Science Center Technorama. Large war surplus radar gap magnets (which were also used to bend beams of particles in a Synchrotron accelerator) have been the exhibit builders and developers dream. They became famous through the Exploratorium's cookbook recipes "Black Sand", "Generator effect", "Curie Point" and so on.
While such magnets have since been replaced by highly powerful neodymium and other rare-earth alloys, in many technical applications.
But there is nothing that comes even remotely close to the unique tactile experience and the haptics, to the real feel of magnetism that a Radar Magnet offers.
The problem is, all those surplus stocks have long since been depleted. That's why we decided, because we strictly believe in uncompromising Hands-on (which means first of all: The exhibit must feel just right) to have the original Radar Magnet perfectly faithfully reproduced - down to imperfections of the surface.
The Radar Magnets are temporarily sold out, but will be available again in March 2008. The delivery period (from March on) will be 1 month. Air shipment is possible because a special sheet metal armature helps to constrain the magnetic field in such a way that the field strength at the outside of the crate/box is maximum 0.1 Tesla.
A major advantage of such massive Radar Magnets over the technically more state-of-the-art magnets is the fact that the magnetic field drops much less over distance. The field strength of these Radar Magnets, at the vertical top face, is 490 Millitesla; at 100 mm distance you still get 10,2 Millitesla. 100 mm under the flat base, there is still a strength of 10,9 Millitesla.
